Sleepless In Seattle.
Nov,01,2008

29th was the screening of TZP in Seattle for the IDA (International Dyslexia Association). There were about 200 members, mostly American I think, and I was curious to see the response of a non Indian audience to what we had made.

First of all, it was not in a cinema hall but in a conference room so the acoustics were not good, and it was a DVD projection. Carlos, the projectionist, was really sweet and had done his best in the circumstances. As the lights dimmed I was really nervous. Here were people who know all about Dyslexia and work in the field of learning disabilities. Also, whenever I watch my work around 6 months after it has released I usually hate it, and this time was no different. As the film played out I kept squirming, wishing I could disappear into my seat.

And then finally the film got over and the lights came onÖ.. to an ABSOLUTELY THUNDEROUS STANDING OVATION!!!

My God it was so moving. I was so overwhelmed. Then I came forward for the Q&A and saw the tears streaming down the cheeks of the audience. I canít tell you how happy I was to see so many people cry! Needless to say I was part of them, I cry at the drop of a hat. And here were people from all over the world who had dedicated their lives to helping children with learning difficulties. I was so glad that IDA had chosen to screen TZP at their annual conference, and that I was able to make it to Seattle. And I felt so blessed to be part of a film that touches people so deeply.

Everyone just loved the film and it had struck a really deep chord. In fact the reaction was exactly as it had been with audiences back home in India. It really amazes me how people from all across the world react to some films in pretty much the same way, which reaffirms the fact of how similar we all are no matter which part of the globe we come from.

Darsheel struck once again and won all hearts. The story and screenplay were unanimously appreciated as were all the other aspects of the film. The music and songs were especially loved and everyone wanted to know more about Shankar, Ehsan, Loy and Prasoon.

All of them wanted to know when the film would release in theatres in the US. On being told that the film has already been released here they all insisted that the film be re-released in the US in theatres, this time for the mainstream American audience. One of the interesting points which came out of the Q&A was the request from the audience to dub the film into English when re-released here. They felt, and rightly so, that they wanted their children to see the film and were afraid that the smaller kids will not be able to read the subtitles. So Iím going to look into that. At the very least the DVD release here can incorporate a dubbed version as well.

Well, you can imagine that I didnít get much sleep that night. So on the night of the 29th there was at least one person who was sleepless in Seattle, and this time it wasnít Tom Hanks.

...Contd from my earlier post...I do a bit of writing whenever
time permits esp on blogs and diary posts. I must humbly admit
that inspired by TZP I have put together a piece of poem on a
defeated child's trauma and how he rises up like a Phoenix and by
the grace of God and blessed by his parents shines radiantly and
wins the race of life! This might not be the appropriate forum to
share my piece of work but triggered by your movie(TZP) and with
your kind permission, I would love to share it with you and all
in my following post...God Bless! n May you make many more such
inspirational wonderful movies. Allah Hafiz

..Contd from my earlier post...Tell u the truth, i was a black
sheep of my family during my childhood and until my 10th grade my
relatives had even planned to inaugrate a hardware store cz I was
they felt I was no better..I did not give up! Although, I did not
have an Aamir(Ramkumar Nikumb) to show me the light at the end of
the tunnel, I definitely had my parents and God's blessings n
today am quite well-off doing consulting projects in Germany n
paradoxically, the family's pride! ... Will continue...

... Contd from my earlier post ...Wonderful performance by Darsh!
In a country as India where educational system still forces
(literally) children to one-track thought process to achieve
academic numbers termed as marks; TZP is a complete eye-opener to
those parents who belligerently ignore niche talents in their
'less-academically competent' child... Will continue ...

Hi Aamir ... Frankly, not a big fan of recent bollywood movies.
Like watching few intelligent films n sensible humour. Contrary
to the mainstream commercial blockbuster stars, I've mostly
observed you perform on lucid topics..things which are sticking
out of the surface prominently but we'r effortlessly endeavoring
for solutions to more complex problems. Your sincerity,
dedication and committment clearly shows in ur works (Sarfrosh,
Lagaan, TZP). I guess, my entire impression on hindi movies and
it's probably the same case for many were appallingly different
before TZP was screened. I have simply loved watching TZP, it
doesn't matter the number of times i've watched it but the
consistency of intensity it carries every time i've sat down with
it is remarkable.

Hi Aamir ji it is good that you have decided to dub TZP in
English. But just I want to say something TZP is not a commercial
movie its a movie that should be watched by everyone across the
globe especially in India so request u to dub the movie in all
regional languages in India and get it re-released. When
Hollywood movies are getting dubbed and released in all regional
language in India why not TZP.It's just my humble request.
And If you are really interested in doing
good movies I want you to remake "Vaaranam Aayiram" another Surya
starrer in Tamil.Hope u like that movie too.
Waiting for the release of Ghajini please
make it fast

Hi Aamir,
Congrats on the fab response tht TZP received at the conference.
I watched the movie on tv only a couple weeks ago (including an
interview). The movie itself was very interesting and informative
but the interview session gave a lot more info about the
disorder, behavior of parents and adults towards children, and so
forth. Its a must watch movie for everyone (non-Indians included)
and would be great if it could be dubbed in English. Congrats
also for TZP to be nominated for Oscars.
Cheers, Nehal

Aamir,
First off-I'm not a big Bollywood movie fan. Just not my style.
But, i did see Lagaan about 4 years ago. Really enjoyed it,
because it effectively delivers a message of respect for all
creatures, regardless of one's power or station in life.
Tonight, I saw TZP. Took me a while to remember who Aamir Khan
was (shocker i know!). But it was phenomenal. In tears the
whole time. Captures little Ishan's suffering so well. Every
parent and teacher needs to see this movie, whether or not they
have ties to dyslexia. It opens our minds up to the fact that we
should not raise our children to be "clones," as you point out in
the film. Just be YOU! Thank you for the courage,
originality, and vision you put into your work. I'll be watching
out for your stuff in the future.
Best of luck--Anjana M., Alabama, USA
