Two bits of good news and one bad.

First the good news.

Folks!!! Its finally released! The DVD of TZP is out in the market!

I wanted to be totally sure before I spoke about it on my blog because there were too many false alarms in between. So today we went to Darsheel’s school and Darsheel’s principal Mrs Bajaj was kind enough to do the honors.

The other bit of good news is that Disney has decided to release the DVD in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand and Canada. I was very happy to know that they liked the film enough to want to distribute TZP in home entertainment for these 5 countries.

Now for the bad news…… and I know I am going to be slaughtered for this one. Disney has a lead time of at least 3 months. They want to do a mainstream release in these 5 markets. So while the DVD has released in India and outside India as well, in these 5 countries it will be a few more months before it comes out.

Now, before those of you living in these 5 countries kill me, please understand that I have no control over this. The only other option would be to not go ahead with Disney’s offer. But I felt that I would like the mainstream audiences in these places to also have the option of seeing this film. If I’m not mistaken this is probably a first for any Indian film except for Lagaan which was released by Columbia Tristar, but that was more because Sony TV India had originally bought the film. Sawaria which was also Sony I am assuming also got a mainstream release, but that was also produced by Sony. So I think this the first time that an Indian film has been picked up by a major distributor independently for a mainstream release.

More importantly, how many films are made on child care? So I want as many people as possible (no matter which part of the world they live in, including people who are not normally exposed to Indian Cinema) to get the chance to see this particular film.

My sincere apologies to those of you living in these 5 countries, and who have been waiting patiently for the DVD to come out.

I am dying to tell you what all in this DVD pack, but first y’all digest this info. Have worked really hard on this DVD and I sincerely hope y’all find it worth the wait.

oooo gosh....I don;t think anybody owns an original Indian DVD
anymore...Its just crazy. Infact its MORE difficult to own an
original DVD than a pirated one. We have to track down 1 hour to
teh city to an authentic store to get the DVD vs a 10 minute trek
to the local grocer for the pirate...

Hey but good news, we try to watch a good movie on the theatres
too so I dont feel soo guilty. And listen the economy as it is
doesnt help either.

Btw yes, piracy in Australia is a HUGE problem! I don't know why
we Indians feel the need to be so cheap and buy $2 dvds that have
3 films on them. We're only benefitting the criminals! Forget
about the producer, forget about the actors, think about the
other 295 people in the unit - at least buy original for their

Film piracy in our country is appauling and while we've got
watchdog services in place, none of us seem to have the guts to
report it. Watchdog services will ransack these indian stores and
threaten to shut them down - moreover they will conduct
investigations and catch these criminals who create pirate dvds.
For over a year I've been thinking of ways to kerb piracy and
promote the original dvds and i've thought of a way - hope to
speak to you guys again soon!

A belated comment, I'm from Australia and was wondering if any
other Aussies here heard anything about the promotion of the
original TZP dvd? I live in Sydney and didn't hear a thing -
quite disappointed.

I've seen the dvd at indian stores but know that within a week of
the DVD being released it was imported from the other countries.

Hi Aamir,

I finally got the TZP DVD and just couldn't stop watching it (and
I used to think there are only so many ways you can watch a film,
silly me ;) )! Last night I watched it with your commentary and
was even more moved, if that's even possible. Now I just wanna
take it to my school and show it to my teammate (who's also
dislexic), my principal, and to all of my students...and yes, I
also do think the message of this film is so universal that it
aught to touch everyone's heart and soul.

On a different note, I didn't get to visit this site for the last
few months and was so disappointed to see that you were here in
the US and I missed it! I live in Colorado, a very pretty
state...please do let me know if you ever visit here. I'd
absolutely love to meet you in person to convey my gratitude. But
for now all I can say for missing you is - ishhhhh!
