Live from Sundance.
Jan,27,2010

My cell phone kept ringing middle of the night. I was too sleepy to do anything about it except curse and hit out wildly in its general direction. Woke up in the morning to see tons of texts messages. Wondered what the deal was. It wasnít my birthday or anniversary, or Eid or Diwali or Christmas. Read the first one and felt a wave of warmth pass through me.

Padma Bhushan.

Wow!

Felt so happy, and such a sense of pride. How I wish I was back home in India. Called my mom, and my brother and sisters. But still felt a huge void of not being back in India. Donít know how to explain it.

Want to thank my country for this honour.

Vande Mataram, ma tujhe salaam.

Want to thank all my well wishers, my fans, for their love, respect and unwavering support over all these years.

Thanks guys.

Another piece of good news is that our film Peepli Live was really well received here at the Sundance Film Festival. We had our first screening on the 24th at the Egyptian Theatre, Park City. Super reaction right through the film, and huge ovation at the end. Audience really seemed to love it. In fact you can read some of the responses on the festival site. Go to http:/festival.sundance.org/2010 , click on film guide, then search for Peepli Live

Also check out the review in Screen International online by David D'Arcy dated 25th Feb.

I was really keen to see the reaction here at Sundance as I wanted to get a sense of how a non-Indian audience reacts to the film. 90% of the audience was non-Indian. I am now even more certain that this film has the potential to engage a world audience. The big challenge, when we release the film worldwide, will be to get them in. It doesnít have any stars, and is in a language that they donít understand.

START THINKING GUYS, I NEED ALL THE HELP AND ADVICE I CAN GET ON THIS ONE!!!

In the meantime...

Ganatantra din Mubarak.

Love.

Dear Aamir,

Congratulations on being selected for Padma Bhushan award, as you really deserve it for your exceptional contributions towards Indian Cinema. I have been one of your keen admirers since your QSQT times.

I was reading about Sundance Film Festival and its competitors and indeed it was a pleasant surprise that your team's movie is one of the 14 titles that got selected out of 1,022 international entries!

I went through some of the reviews of your movie and people seem to be appreciating it wherever it got screend! I wonder if you are planning to release the movie on a mainstream basis. Also I request you to do so as it will be definitely appreciated by people at large. Many people are just waiting for another release from AKP, believe me.

Very eager to watch your film 'Peepli Live'. Kindly release it all over the world (at least in UAE, please!).

Hi,
Just wanted to share our little secret. My three idiots, 5 years old Hamza, 3 years old Ziyaad and 1.5 years old Haaniyah are your greatest fans. Since the third day of the release, they have been watching the movie every day, at least for 30 minuets.

I really feel proud to hear a Indian film getting screened at Sundance and on top of that, the overwhelming response it's receiving is the icing on the cake.
What's more important is that India has finally come up with a film that's appealing to the world audience. We often raise a hue and cry about our 'critically acclaimed' and 'intelligence multiplex audience' movies getting 'underestimated' at foreign festivals and award functions, but let's face the truth-most of these films are aimed for a commercial release in our country and thus their tone and style gets hideously kitschy and bollywood-ish and hence the disaster.
Anyway, let's hope that 'Peepli Live' might do the trick. And most importantly, since it has the backing of a mainstream actor/producer like you, it might not suffer the fate of lesser independently made 'sensible' movies in our country...

A film has a language all of it's own. People will find their own meanings in it. Don't worry!:)

Congratulations on the screening at Sundance , Hope the movie Peepli Live hits our screens soon. Looking forward to it. A trailer or two would be nice though. All I have found so far on the net are couple of 1min cuts of the movie.
Really Appreciate it.

Also looking forward to your wife's directorial venture , Dhobi Ghat.

Cheers.
