Withnail, Ignatius and I.
Sep,10,2009

Kiran and I saw what we thought was one of the funniest films we have seen in our lives. Its called Withnail And I. It is the most wacked out and bizarrely funny film I have ever seen.

Warning. I’m not sure I should recommend it though. I am not sure how many people will find this kind of humour appealing. I believe it wasn’t very successful at the box office when it released, so judging by that not many in the public liked it. But for those who want to experiment with very unusual humour in cinema, go for it.

Its a story about these 2 out of work actors and their mad, funny and tragic lives. Exceedingly well written, brilliantly performed and superbly executed. Its a huge cult success. Written and directed by Bruce Robinson. British.

Watching Withnail And I reminded me of one of my favourite books, A Confederacy Of Dunces, written by John Kennedy Toole. Again a piece of work that I find supremely funny and tragic. Absolutely brilliant. A must read, but again I don’t know how many of you will like it. Have read the book twice and plan to read it once every couple years.

The book was actually published after the death of the author and he did not live to see the huge success that it became. In fact the book would never have been published had it not been for Toole’s mother who found a carbon copy of the manuscript left in the house following Toole’s suicide in 1969 at the young age of 31. Toole’s mother took this manuscript to various publishers in attempt to get it published without any success until she took it to Walker Percy, an author, and literally forced him to read it. Percy explains in his foreword that he started the manuscript with great reservation but got sucked into the book and loved it. The book was published in 1980, 11 years after Toole’s death, and became a cult classic, and then later a mainstream success.

So much brilliance in this world. So inspiring.

What fun.

Hi everyones ,
Am very happy to be here Thanks Aamir. Actually i wrote something very huge only to realize that i cant paste mor than 100 words in here.
The jist is ...i want you to act in a movie which is about having a dream . In which you are a college boxer champion , then girl friends , parents leave you cause you are into boxing . Only your sister supports you. You reach nationals then , Punjabi is there is a good boxer , in semi's you have a match against him which you are first loosing but wont give up then again loose at end in final round with an awesome finishing blow . Then the Mr.Punjabi praises you he says you almost won , its really great that you reached this stage in first attempt ......Then a few snaps showing you winnng nxt chapionship
Am no writer/director i just want to see you in a movie with dreams , and these dreams are best protrayed in boxing, rugby , or some game lik tat .

Hi TESORO
Thanks for reacting to my post. Hmmm... Now I am not sure that I expressed myself properly in it. Everyone is of course free to do as they please. I just want to express how I see things now and am just trying to be a better friend, that's all. :-)

You take care.

Hi Aamir,

Took up on your "offer" and THOROUGHLY enjoyed Withnail.... It also seems to be a cult film - don't know how come no one ever told us about it! Just didn't come up I suppose. But thanks a bunch for the fantabuloustic suggestion. :)

Much love, and ALL the VERY, VERY BEST for your forthcoming film.

@ Aline (how are you my dear? Drop a line when you have some time!) saw your long post on the Withnail blog, but I have to respectfully disagree with you (for the first time??). I see this blog as a social gathering, more than as a political system. In a political system one has to work and get involved to keep things going in the right direction. Whereas in a social gathering, one comes and goes, stays if the party is good and leaves if it's bad. While I agree that it's the respect we have for our host and the bonds we have with each other that should keep us coming back, I will continue to stay away from personal arguments and fights, even if that means staying away from the blog altogether for a while. I like many things about the dynamics of this blog, but it's like every other group: not everybody gets along all the time. And that's fine, but I reserve the right to not be a part of that when it happens :)

Dear JAMILA,

We all get hot and talk/write before thinking over the possible complications it might cause.
So I should apologize to you too.

No I have not seen Firaaq by Nandita Das.

You must remember that movies (even so called "based on true story" ones) take a lot of artistic liberty and use heavy doses of shock and awe effects to leave an impression on their audience.

Unless confirmed by personal experience always view them (or any book) with a pinch of salt.

Sincerely,

~Praveer
